Registered Dietitian Urges: Don't Let The Food Companies Cast A Harry Potter Like Spell On Your Kids

North Palm Beach, FL (PRWEB) July 21, 2007 -- While recent announcements from large food and beverage corporations that they will be restricting the marketing of their products to children are encouraging, one registered dietitian is still wary. Jayson Hunter, RD, CSCS is determined to have the success of the Harry Potter books help reduce childhood obesity.

"It's simple really: The large food companies are fantastic marketers. And they're in business to sell their products. I don't fault them for that", Hunter was quoted as saying. "But since they are so good at what they do it's as if they cast a Harry Potter like spell on your kids."

The registered dietitian of ten years expanded his point by adding, "The new book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows can help raise awareness. How? By teaching parents just how magical the marketing of large corporations can be."

Here are three warnings from Hunter to help parents fight off the food marketing wizards:

1) It's no coincidence your child's favorite television characters promote foods filled with sugar. And if it contains trans fats or partially hydrogenated oils then avoid that product.

2) Remember that as much as 98% of kids advertising on a Saturday morning is for unhealthy foods. Commercials during these shows are directly aimed at your child, so it's very important parents are keeping an eye on what they are watching.

3) Deceptive labeling can even convince parents that junk food is somehow wholesome. For example some cereals promote the inclusion of whole grains. What they fail to promote is the fact most of the calories come from sugar.
