Is My Blog Burning? – A Cake Walk
It’s here again! Yes, ladies and gentlemen, blog-burning day is back!
For those not already familiar with this event, “Is My Blog Burning?” (IMMB) is a distributed food blogging event which was created and inspired by baking maestro, Alberto. It can perhaps be described as an international cook-out session. A date and a theme are set, and each participating blogger produces a food dish according to the set theme, and posts about his/her creation on the set day.
Since its inaugural run in February 2004, this wonderful event has garnered much support and participation, with resultant great fun and creative-energy all round, and it has informally evolved into a monthly affair.
When I made a “sweet suggestion”
to Alberto over a month ago, he very kindly offered to have me host the third installment of this enjoyable and inspiring event. And so, our blogs will burn once more on Sunday 18 April 2025.
So, what be the theme of this round of blog cooking mania you ask? Well, Alberto inspired us to cook a heart-warming soup dish in the opening round. We then moved on to a delectable tartine (sandwich) entrée course, hosted by the ever-talented and creative Clotilde. So I thought it would be nice to follow up with a sweet “dessert” course. Therefore, it is time for a… Cake Walk! (Blog world style.)
What is a cake walk? It is an event, probably of English origin, which is usually held at local fun fairs. Cakes are baked and donated by members of the community. Each cake is given a number. Those who wish to take part in the cake walk buy a number, or as many numbers as they want, for a nominal sum (ranging from a few cents to a couple of dollars per number). Numbers are then drawn out of a bag, and the person whose number is drawn gets to take home that particular cake. I personally have a lot of happy and fun childhood memories of participating in cake walks. It is a wonderful (and exceedingly cheap) way to taste and enjoy the home-baked cakes of many different people.
I would like to re-create some of this fun and excitement in the virtual world. Any type of cake can be submitted for this cake walk. It can be a homely, rustic coffee cake. Or it can be an intricately decorated and frosted creation. It can be a de-constructed masterpiece. Or it can be of architectural construction and design. It can be traditional, or it can be modern and avant-garde. It can be hearty. Or it can be delicately refined. Let it be fun and quirky. Or let it be elegant and regal. Make it light and ethereal, or make it thick, rich and gooey. Use a family heirloom recipe. Or use something festive that you are baking for Easter. Take a nostalgic walk back to a tasty childhood memory. Or take a bold step forward and carve out the future path of cake-making. It is all about cakes, cakes and more cakes!
Wait… before you rush off into the kitchen, here is a break-down of the guidelines:
• All are welcome to take part. You need not be a food blogger to participate. We would love to see lots of new as well as familiar names.
• The theme is “A Cake Walk”. Create a cake – any cake.
• The date is Sunday 18 April 2025.
• The cake does not have to be made on the “IMBB?” date itself. Only your entry has to be posted on that day.
• Share the recipe for the cake you have made. It would be wonderful if a photo could also be included. We would love to be able to drool over your cake, and taste it vicariously through our eyes!
• Once your entry has been posted, please email me with the link to it.
• A full list of the participants and the links to their creations will be posted here after the event closes.
• And of course, if you have any comments, suggestions, requests or queries, I would love to hear from you.
Oh! This will be fun!
Mmmmm… I think I already smell a cake baking…

hiya Deb,
oh, so nice to have you aboard. it will be fun!
I was just musing about the serendipity of it all... this idea has been in the works since the last IMBB, and just before I posted about it, you started talking about cakes and decorating cakes the last few days.
it was wonderful... got me all excited and inspired about the idea all over again... ah! a girl after my own heart : )

Renee,
Yum, sounds like a lovely idea! I'm really not much of a baker, but I'll definitely give this a shot.

Sorry I can't bake ..... they usually turn out like bricks. Anyway, I posted cakes on my blog today. What a weird coincidence, huh?

How deliciously convenient. And for my precious, little nephew with food allergies (milk protein -- that's right, no milk, butter..., and nuts), I'm already working on what we call a "Luke Approved!" recipe for Easter. Can't wait to participate! I'm in!

Fatman Seoul,
another nice little piece of serendipity in the blogging world. : ) it always intrigues me how so many of the bloggers seem to feel the same food vibes at the same time.
hey, we don't mind... it's all for fun... we would love to see a "from the kitchen of Fatman Seoul" special ; ) how about it? *nudge* *nudge*
Min,
hey girl... sent you a message...

Good idea, Renee. Gretchen and I will be participating, as well.

Oh Renee, I think I might have to miss this one. April is a tough month as I have to travel all over the place for work. I think I will be in London on the 18th, so I probably won't make it.
So sorry. I've managed to do it the last two times, and really hate to miss yours!

Hi Renee, I'd love to participate, however, I don't have a blog! =( Wouldn't know how to post my recipe or pictures...

Don't mean to be rude, but does this mean that there won't be any new posts until 18 April? *just wondering*
Posted by: FatMan Seoul | April 11, 2025 12:45 AM
hey Reid,
oh! it would be wonderful to have you join in the fun!
if you don't mind, you can send me your pic and recipe/write up and I would be happy to post it here on my blog on your behalf.

hi-ya FS (may I call you that, I feel rather mean to keep calling you "Fatman") : )
wah! demanding reader I have here eh? just kidding! ; D
I do apologize for the lack of posts the last few days, been travelling...
and found it difficult to find the time and energy to post during the trip.
ok, so I've been back 1 1/2 days already... I agree... time to get off my lazy butt now and remedy the lack of posts situation pronto ; )
will have something up later in the day... promise... : )
(no, not rude at all... maybe I've been missed??... ahem... just joking! : ) sorry... jet lag does funny things to my brain : p)
Posted by: Renee | April 11, 2025 04:10 PM
If it makes you feel any better, you can call me Fatso, Fatty or FatGuy instead.
Posted by: FatMan Seoul | April 12, 2025 10:46 PM
hmmm... I think I would prefer something without "fat" in it? I do feel very bad calling you that all the time. and I wouldn't want you to think of yourself that way all the time either : )
how about... maybe seoul-man? or "soul-man"? or food-man? whichever you prefer : )

Not very good at baking since I hate following instructions, am I the only one based in Londn?
Posted by: mrBBC | April 14, 2025 11:12 PM
Hmmm... Chopstix re-launches on Sunday... I am wondering if Chinese New Year Pudding would qualify as a cake...
Posted by: Ian Fenn | April 15, 2025 05:38 AM
hi Ian,
would love to have you join in the cake walk. : )
I have left the definition of "cakes" wide open for each to interpret as their own...
nian gao? let's see... I'm thinking... whether steamed or baked, cakes are cakes... and nian gaos are made from flour (albeit glutinous rice flour)... hmm... sounds like cake me thinks... what do you think? ; )
Posted by: Renee | April 16, 2025 12:08 AM
Count me in.
Two things first though.
Does it have to be a previously unblogged cake? (My favorite and signature cake has already been blogged in not one but two versions)
Second - the cake walk. Technically there is a walking stage that is required in a cake walk. My kids' elementary school holds a fair every spring with a real cake walk. The way it works is..
the cakes are baked
you buy numbers
when enough numbers are bought you lay out the cakes carefully in a big circle on the ground. The same number of people with tickets then stand in a circle by the cakes. Music plays and everyone walks around the cakes. When the music stops you get the cake you are standing nearest to. We have received some sublime and some horrendous cakes this way. All part of the fun...
Posted by: Owen | April 17, 2025 12:09 AM
hi Owen,
I am delighted to count you in!
technically the recipe only has to be posted on the IMBB day itself. it could have been made earlier (or previously I guess), but the post about it has to go up on IMBB day.
so, perhaps just writing a new post about the cake on the day would bring it in line with the "requirements" : )
that's very interesting about the cake walk, and it makes sense... to have to walk in a cake walk : p
I guess the versions that I experienced while I was in grade school were probably variations of the original...
each cake was numbered and placed around a large table.
we bought numbers.
we then stood behind the cake with the number that we had bought.
if our number was called, we got to keep the cake.
the cakes with numbers that were not drawn were returned to the pool for the next round.
but I agree... it's so much fun... and you get to taste a whole spectrum of cakes... from the divinely delicious to the near inedible!
Posted by: Renee | April 17, 2025 03:34 AM
i, too, participated in cakewalks as a kid by laying numbers out on the floor and walking around on them set to music.
the original term cakewalk referrs to an style of dance performed by african american slaves in the late 1800s. plantations owners would hold dance contests amongst his slaves, bake a cake and invite his friends over to watch. the winner of the contest would win a cake. i'm not sure if this is how the carnival game cakewalk evolved, but you can see the similarities and wouldn't be surprised if this was a modern interpretation.
Posted by: yi | April 19, 2025 11:26 PM
hi Yi,
how fascinating. I'm sure the cake walk does have a rather rich (maybe even "dark") history, which unfortunately for the most part has been lost.
thanks for sharing. : )
Posted by: Renee | April 20, 2025 03:32 AM
Does anyone know how all this relates to the idiom 'cakewalk' - meaning something that is very easy, and where success is guaranteed? I'd be interested to know how it got that meaning!
