Touched By A Stranger

arnotts_tim_tam_tia_maria_1

Long-time readers of this blog will know that I have a thing for Tim Tams, and dark chocolate Tim Tams in particular. But these last few months have been difficult for me in the Tim Tam department. These little chocolate joys have been out of stock all over Singapore for months on end; not a single packet can be found at any of the supermarkets across the country. Why there has been this lengthy interruption to supply I do not know; what I do know is that it has left me with a severe case of Dark Chocolate Tim Tam cravings.

Before today, there had seemed little possibility of assuaging my raging longings, short of flying Down Under and packing a suitcase full of the chocolate indulgence to bring home with me. But this afternoon, as a result of the heartwarming friendliness and kindness of a “stranger”, I received not only a bagful of the dark chocolate Tim Tams, but also two packets of the new Tia Maria-flavored variety which has not even been launched in Singapore yet. I felt like I had struck the lottery! icon_biggrin.gif

Sometimes I am truly overwhelmed by the warm-heartedness, kindness and friendliness that are extended to me by the readers of this blog. And yes, today’s kind “stranger” is a regular reader of this blog. Until this afternoon, we had never met. In fact, until about three weeks ago, we had never communicated. Then we exchanged a couple of emails about a certain food item; she mentioned she was going to Australia and did I need to buy anything; in jest, I said I was craving Tim Tams but no, I really didn’t need anything. And yet, upon her return, I found an email in my in-box telling me she had helped me to buy some Tim Tams! I was flabbergasted; I was humbled and touched that she had thought of me, someone she didn’t even know, except through reading my blog. And yet, she was prepared to lug back a bagful of biscuits all the way from Australia for me. Thank you, IH! You made my day.

I would also like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has, through this blog, touched me in so many precious ways. Thank you to all of you who have extended such warmth and friendliness to me… to all of you who regularly leave comments on the blog, and share so generously your feedback, as well as your cooking and food experiences and ideas, I thank you for making my blog journey such a fun, enjoyable and enlightening one. Your enthusiasm is contagious! It is you who have helped make this blog what it is. Thank you also to all of you who send me such heartwarming, kind, fun, chatty and informative emails. It is a joy every morning to read my mail. I may struggle a little bit sometimes in getting back to all of you on time; but please know that each email warms my heart, and reaffirms for me the wondrous kindness and love of humanity. I am so touched that you take the time to drop me a note, sometimes just to let me know that a recipe has gone well, or to share a disaster, or to let me know that you have discovered a food item that I have mentioned in a particular shop, or sometimes, simply just to say “hi”. I am truly humbled by your support, open-heartedness and warmth. Thank you for extending to me your friendship.

You know, for every nasty email I receive (and I have received quite a few of them, from people who felt the need to make unprovoked outbursts), I receive so many times more emails of the warm loving variety. And these I cherish and appreciate most sincerely. I haven’t really had a chance before, but today I would like to thank and acknowledge you. Thank you.

But what of the Tia Maria Tim Tams you ask. How are they? They are very good; lusciously rich with the aroma and flavor of Tia Maria. Coffee and chocolate are a natural, heaven-made match. These biscuits are also incredibly fresh. Just look at the gleaming glossiness of the chocolate coating. But you know what would have made these biscuits even better? A dark chocolate instead of a milk chocolate coating. Maybe I’m biased – I’m a huge dark chocolate fan after all – but the milk chocolate was just that tad bit too sugary sweet for me. However, I’m not complaining… after months of going without Tim Tams, I’m savoring every bite of my little bounty! icon_smile.gif

Hi Renee, you may want to try this little shop in Race Course Road called Aussiemart. Their opening hours are a bit uncertain, but try going around lunch and dinner time. It stocks Australian foodstuff and they have Tim Tams. Even the Tia Maria ones, my friend mentioned this in her posting in one of the food forums I frequent (cut and paste):

I'm sorry to hear that you get horrid emails. You are entitled to write anything in your own blog. Just ignore them, sickos.

hi Umami,
thanks for the great heads-up! will check them out.

yeah, I don't let those emails get to me... I subscribe to what someone famous once said: each time a person opens their mouth, they reveal a piece of their soul...

Hi Renee! Aren't Tim Tams wonderful? I'm convinced that they are the real reason my best friend emigrated to Australia :) Luckily for me, they're now quite readily available in the UK. I wonder how long it will take for this Tia Maria version to arrive....

Hi Renee, i am a dark chocolate fan too and really loved my tim tams....also in Australia we have chewy choc fudge and hazelnut flavour...which is really yummie....maybe u can tried the liberty supermarkets..they do have a good range of Oz products....

Posted by: husky9 | June 20, 2025 10:09 AM

Renee,

That was very kind and generous. Isn't it so wonderful that you get to meet so many nice people here. Thank you so much for introducing me to such a wonderful community of people. If I had never stumbled on your site, I wouldn't have been encouraged, by you no less, to start my own site.

By the way, I've never had Tim Tams and I've never seen that brand here in the states as well. Couldn't tell you if I remembered seeing that brand of food product when I visited Australia several years back. The only thing I remembered were all of the Lotte products that were being offered. I too am a dark chocolate lover as I also find that milk chocolate is a bit too sweet.

hi Angela!
oh yes, they are!
hmmm... I just might have to take a cue from your friend if this drought of Tim Tams continues in S'pore ; ) : D
oh, I'm so glad they're now available in the UK... when I was living there in the late 80s, they were unheard of (much to my taste-buds' dismay)... lol.

hi Sonya,
that's so sweet! thanks for the very kind offer... but I think I'll doing ok for quite a few months... now that I have my little hoard of Tim Tams ; )
hee. I feel like a squirrel preparing for Winter! lol.
but I hope I can still take you up on the offer if I should have another "Tim Tam crisis" nearer the time? ; )

hi husky9,
ooh, hazelnut flavor sounds interesting... is this also milk chocolate covered? or dark chocolate?
wouldn't it be lovely if they did the tia maria and hazelnut in dark chocolate... *swoon* then I'll probably be eating Tim Tams all day!
unfortunately all the Liberty supermarkets are gone now : (
but Umami gave a wonderful suggestion (above) of that little Aussie shop... so, I'm going to go check it out real soon : )

hi Reid,
yeah, it is! totally amazing, awe-inspiring, inspirational and humbling all at the same time. : )
hmm... Lotte sounds very familiar but haven't seen the brand around in ages... am wondering if it has been acquired by Arnotts or used to be a sub-brand of Arnotts?? (maybe an Australian can confirm or clarify?)
well, if I still have some Tim Tams left by the time you get here, or if FINALLY they ship some over to us poor deprived s'poreans ; ) by then, you can try them and let me know what you think : )

Posted by: Renee | June 21, 2025 03:23 AM

no worries, abt tht.

*takes notes down to pda * .. checked .. will get u some tia maria tim tams when i get back end of the yr ==> tht is if u can endure =D

Posted by: Sonya | June 21, 2025 03:37 AM

Hi Renee, ok so your photo of the tim tam prompted this mail-dark choc tim tams n the tia maria ones are sooooo good (well so good i had to restrain myself to an average of a pack a week when i was in melbourne).
anyway, i say, sweets for the sweet-i was impressive by your detailed "kueh-kueh kuih-kuih" write-up. It's a good chronicle of some sweets from my childhood. my mum never failed to bring some kueh-kueh back for her sunday market trip for afternoon tea.
Good stuff you have in this blog!

hi Sonya,
: ) thanks!
I'll send out a SOS should the need arise : D

hi Chev,
thanks for dropping me a note : )
and for the very nice words of support... glad you are enjoying the blog.
yeah, that's about what we try to stick to as well (one pack a week), but not always successful I have to say : p

hi husky9,
hehe! : D
just noticed you typed my name in to the "name" box, so I got a little confused and thought I had written a message to myself! lol!
thanks for the very kind offer... I'll give you a shout if I need help : ) for the moment I'm still happily chomping through my little stash of Tim Tams : ) yay!

Posted by: Renee | June 23, 2025 07:13 PM

Hi Renee,
oops i am so blur...i realised that back home there are 2 type of tim tams..once made in Malaysia and the other in Aust and they do taste differently...also u may want to check out www.timtam.com.au for their recipes...worth a try...really cool stuff for chocaholic timtamholic cos i am one of them :)

Posted by: husky9 | June 23, 2025 09:25 PM

husky9,
; ) no worries...
oh, I never realized that there was a M'sian made version... I think the ones in S'pore are all Aussie made... so no complaints from me : D
haha! I like how you put that: timtamholic... yep! I think I qualify! lol.

Posted by: Renee | June 24, 2025 04:33 PM

You may not know this, but Arnott's Mint Slice (another Aussie favourite, only second to the TimTam) released a new version at the same time the Tia Maria timtams came out....theirs is a Kahlua version! If you don't know about Mint Slice, they are covered in DARK chocolate. I haven't actually sampled a Kahlua Mint Slice (with the mint flavour!), so can't confirm that they're covered in dark chocolate, but I'm fairly certain they are. They'd be the ones to hunt down!

Posted by: Niki | June 25, 2025 06:08 PM

hi Niki,
thanks for the heads-up : )
unfortunately, I'm not a mint person at all... weird I know... but I don't even like mint sweets! lol.
but I'll keep an eye out for these kahlua versions... who knows? I may just be converted : )

Posted by: Renee | June 25, 2025 07:18 PM

Well, I embarked upon a taste test, just for academic research you know ;-), as I saw packets of Kahlua Slice in the supermarket yesterday. And yes, I can confirm they are coffee alcohol flavoured filling surrounded by DARK chocolate! :-) Very, very nice, although I think I prefer the Tia Maria tim tams slightly more, even though they're made with milk chocolate.
They're also made by Arnotts, if you are on the lookout for them.

Posted by: Niki | June 28, 2025 07:44 AM

Reid,
I've never heard of Lotte products, and I've lived in Australia all my life. :-) What kind of foodstuffs did they produce?

Posted by: Niki | June 28, 2025 07:48 AM

NIKI!!
I can't believe you did this to me... how could you?! ; D
now I'm desperate for some Kahlua slices... oh my... kahlua... dark chocolate... oh my... oh my...
*drool cascades onto keyboard*
(wait... does this kahlua slice have mint? please say no...)
I want some kahlua slices.... : (
*hint* *hint*

(and oh, don't you just love such *academic research*... I could do it all day. LoL)

Posted by: Renee | June 28, 2025 04:25 PM

Hi Niki,

Lotte makes chewing gum in strange flavors (like green tea and coffee) as well as other confections. The products that I remember seeing in Australia were little crackers filled with chocolate and imprinted with koala bears. =)

Posted by: Reid | June 28, 2025 05:56 PM

Lol! Nope, no mint flavour in Kahlua slices. Just coffee and dark chocolate.
Although, I must admit that I haven't yet tasted a room temperature one. For some reason, when we came home my bf put them in the fridge...in Summer that'd be fine, but it was 11 degrees celcius all weekend!!
In the furtherance of academic research ;-) I'll ask him to pull them out and we'll try again tonight.
When I get a chance I'd be happy to send some over to you. :-) They're only a limited release, so I'm not certain how long they'll keep making them.

Posted by: Niki | June 29, 2025 01:05 PM

Hi Reid,
The mention of green tea flavour makes me think they may be a slightly more specialised item, and not widely available in supermarkets. In fact, I remember eating little chocolate filled bears, but that was in Tokyo! The name is slightly familiar, and I think I may have had other yummy Lotte products in Japan. I have a feeling the Lotte products are/were all imported items and not stocked widely here.

Posted by: Niki | June 29, 2025 01:10 PM

Niki,

You're probably right because now that I think about it, the Japanese are into that sort of cutesy thing. The only reason why I remembered it, was the connection between Australia and the koala shaped cookies.

Renee,

By the way, I found a company in California that sells Tim Tams! =) I'm almost ready to buy some of the dark chocolate variety! =) I'm just waiting to hear if they ship to Hawaii. Sometimes when they say they ship within the US, they mean only the 48 contiguous states...leaving us and Alaska out! =(

Posted by: Reid | June 29, 2025 06:52 PM

You can actually order Tim Tams online through the Arnotts website. It was set up to cater for huge demand by homesick Aussies for this taste of home. A variety of flavours are available.
http://shops.arnotts.com.au/StoreFront.bok
However, I think they only deliver large cases of the bikkies, so it's best if a group of rabid tim tam lovers get together to order a case.

Posted by: Niki | June 29, 2025 08:44 PM

hi Niki,
I managed to get my hands on a packet of kahlua slices today... and they tasted good! but would have been much better if they had been fresh... see my most recent post : (
I was quite upset actually.
yeah, I think I might just have to try to round up a group of deprived people and see what we can do... thanks for the link : )

hi Reid,
woo hoo... I hope you get to try some Tim Tams (and I hope they are fresh).
haha... yeah, I realized that too... they sometimes "forget" there are 2 other states : )
