Thank You for Your Concern
In the wake of the earthquake and tsunamis, I’ve received several anxious and worried emails asking after me. I’m so very, very touched and warmed by your concern. Thank you for caring.
I am fine. We got home just before Christmas.
However, the utter devastation and staggering (and still ever-rising) human toll have been terribly traumatic to witness on TV and to read about in the papers. All the tragic images and the horrific survivor stories. And knowing people that have been directly affected have brought the tragedy even closer to home. Geographically, it has also been a close call.
For those who may have had friends or family vacationing in the area and are affected, my prayers, thoughts and heartfelt wishes are with you.
And for the rest, if you feel you would like to make a small contribution towards urgent relief efforts, please do contact your local or national chapter of the Red Cross Society, or an International relief organization like Care or Mercy Relief. Medicine, shelter, food, and above all, clean drinkable water are desperately and very urgently needed. Please help.
I’ve been feeling rather emotional, teary and knocked down by the whole thing, and can’t even begin to think about blogging right now, much less blogging about “indulgent” food -- it all just seems too frivolous -- given that so many are just desperate for clean water to simply stay alive.
In the meantime, I wish you and your family a safe and peaceful New Year.
Take care!

Renee,
I'm so glad to know that you're safe and sound. I was quite nervous while watching the new coverages of the Tsunamis. Though I have no relatives in the area, I can relate to how you feel. Remember, this blog is your own, and you can post or talk about whatever you feel like.
All the Best,
Allen

Hi Renee:
I'm also very happy you're ok. I've been a reader for some time and was actually in Singapore the first couple weeks of December. When I heard about the disaster, I immediately wondered how Singapore faired... I'm glad everything is ok. Take Care.

thanks Nyetzy,
I do count my blessings... and am praying hard for all those affected.
hi Allen,
thanks so much for the comforting words : )
hi Jennifer,
very nice to hear from you... thanks for taking the time to drop me a note : )
hope you had an enjoyable holiday in Singapore ; )
yes, fortunately, Singapore experienced nothing more than a couple of rumbles in one or two locations... nothing serious at all.
hey Lance,
thanks so much for the concern... I'm very touched.
hi MrsT,
thanks for caring : )
hiya jo,
no, Singapore was not affected by the tsunami, although some people in a couple of areas of the country did say they felt some tremors from the initial quake.
other than that, we have not been affected.
I've just been sad and devastated by the suffering and anguish of those in Thailand, Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India... and half a dozen other countries.
the scale is almost incomprehensible... just this morning, the Singapore-based regional TV station reported that the number of deaths has now surged past 60,000! : ( and is still climbing!
it's so horrifying!
the images of mass graves and bodies being moved by excavators is so very, very sad.
have the Australian media been giving the disaster much coverage?
I just realized that Malaysian media seems to have only concentrated on the limited effect in Penang and Kedah, and so a lot of Malaysians have not been made aware of the scale of this disaster.
anyway, I know I still owe you an email reply...
I didn't get round to checking my pre-Christmas mail till after Xmas, but the last few days I haven't been feeling up to getting any replies out.
I'll try to get something out to you by the end of the week... sorry...
hi Jessica,
it is all so terribly tragic... haven't been sleeping properly since it all happened : (
hi PS,
I would really like that too, but unfortunately things look like they will get worse before they get better.
food- and water-borne diseases are a serious threat, according to health experts, although I personally (and not meaning to sound pessimistic) think this is more than a threat, and is probably imminent.
the infrastructure in Indonesia, Sri Lanka and India are gone... sewerage systems damaged, water supplies polluted, dead bodies left exposed... the injured left exposed to the elements and infections... aid, medicine and water are just not getting through quickly enough... it's all just too horrifying and sad to even think about it.
and this is all just the immediate future.
reconstruction and the rebuilding of lives will take many more months, if not years (long after the rest of the world has forgotten and moved on).

Renee,
In London theres been almost nonstop coverage focusing mainly where UK tourists were- Maldives/Sri Lanka and Thailand. SOme seem to have forgotten about our neighbour Indonesia- possibly the difficulty of getting tv crews there also makes it less likely to get any news footage.
I am dismayed and appalled by the contrast between my existence and the frivolity of my whims and fancies compared to people who have lost everything.
Egads.

Yes, the media down under (Australia, at least) has been extensive, primarily because it's all so uncomfortably close to us; Indonesia is our closest neighbour. Additionally, Australia has such a large Asian population and many internation students from Asia back home for the holidays that practically everybody knows someone who was over there or has relatives who are in one of the affected countries. Additionally, there has been a lot of coverage about the Australian casualties; Phuket is a major tourist destination for Australians- many were holidaying there for Christmas and thus were involved.

Hi Renee
Glad to hear you are OK - the news coverage looked absolutely frightening. Hope you have a peaceful and prosperous 2005 - best wishes to you and your family.

Renee,
I have collected lots of information, particularly aid donation information, in "2004 Tsunami: How Foodies Can Help" including coverage, links to numerous aid agencies, and news update sites. Would you mention this in your next blog piece and link to my article?
Stay safe - Juliette

mrbbc,
it is very sobering, and a good reminder to be grateful and thankful for all our blessings and for those who are dear to us.
as for media coverage... I watch CNN, BBC and Channel News Asia to get an overall more balanced view... but it's all so terribly heartbreaking to watch...
Niki,
thanks for the info.
hi Jeanne,
thanks for the wishes.
a very happy, safe and peaceful New Year to you and your family too.
hi Juliette,

hiya pinkcocoa,

wishing you and your family a safe, happy and peaceful New Year too.

Hi Renee,
How are you doing? Its been quite some time since your last post. I need some help, do you know any stores in Singapore which sell Holy Basil? Either my pronunciation is lousy or I didnt check at the right places, so far I havent found any!!
Thanks.
Posted by: Jahnvi | January 7, 2026 07:04 PM
hi jhanvi,
I'm ok... thanks for asking : )
umm... I'm not sure... I've never bought holy basil before.
if I'm not wrong, it's not really from the basil family, but is a herb used very often in Thai cooking, and is called "gra pow" or something like that in Thai.
so maybe you can try the Thai grocery shops and/or supermarkets at Golden Mile? just a guess...
sorry I can't be of more help.
good luck with the search!
