Gong Xi Fa Cai! Kong Hei Fatt Choy!

To all who are celebrating the Spring Festival, my somewhat belated (actually, not really ; there are still 9 days of festivities -- and thus by default, a lot more munching, feasting and, ahem, gorging -- to go yet) wishes for a Happy Lunar New Year! May the new year of the Rooster bring you and yours much joy, happiness, health and fulfillment.

Thank you to all who wrote or left comments enquiring after me and sending me New Year wishes. Thanks for thinking of me and for being concerned. Please bear with me for a little longer as I slowly get to each of your emails.

My sincere apologies for the protracted blogging silence. It has been one thing after another.

First, I was away. Then I came home only to have my computer act up on me. The monitor died. Which wasn’t all that bad really. After all, it gave me the perfect excuse to run out and get myself a sleek, chic and elegant 19” LCD panel (woohoo! ). But what do you know? The motherboard became jealous of the lavish love and attention I was giving my new monitor, and so decided to up and leave as well. Yep! She decided to simply expire on me, without notice, without even so much as a hint of what she was plotting and scheming so secretively and quietly as she hummed unobtrusively in the background. Never mind that she had only been in service for just over 2 years. Never mind that she left me in a lurch with a ton of unread and unreplied emails. Never mind that it was almost Chinese New Year when things were always at their craziest.

And I learnt my lesson -- yet again (for the umpteenth time) -- that I should, no, must backup my data constantly. Backkup data. Backup data. Why does that never occur to me until something happens to the PC?

Given that I’m not technically inclined in the remotest, it has meant that things are getting sorted out according to someone else’s schedule -- not mine. And so it is taking me a while to get back up to speed on my new PC. I’ve now had this new PC for 5 days, and some of my software are still not working! Which means we have to be photo-less for a while more… I can’t get the photo bit working yet! Sigh!

I swear, each time I change computers or have to format / re-format hard-disks, I end up screaming wild, raging murder at Bill Gates. I’m cussing and muttering unspeakables under my breath. And many a times, I’m almost tempted to hurl my brand new PC against the wall. Yes, I know, it’s Chinese New Year, and one is supposed to think only nice thoughts and say nice things to and about people. But Windows makes that a nigh impossible task, I tell you.

I mean, am I asking for a lot? No, I don’t think so. All I want is for Windows to work cooperatively and harmoniously with all the other pieces of software that I need to make my life easy, fun and happy. Is it so much to ask that it stops giving me ridiculous error messages and making those awful beeping sounds, and just plain making life difficult for me? I mean, I’m not asking it to perform miracles. Heaven forbid! No, all I want is for Windows to be friendly, easy to work with and helpful! That’s what it’s meant to be there for -- to make life a breeze. Yeah, right! Not when it treats every piece of new hardware and software as a potential enemy to be battled and rejected. Urggh! It’s enough to make a gal want to switch to the Mac!

Anyway, to cut a long story short, it’s taking me many (many, many) days to get everything reloaded and working properly (key word here), to retrieve and restore my data etc. But I am at least, finally, back online. And it feels good!

Oh, but before we leave this awfully boring subject, would the technically-savvy out there please, please, please (I’m begging you) help me with something... two things, actually. Does it matter which order you load the software? For some reason, it seems to create conflict for certain softwares depending on the sequence everything gets loaded up? Something is definitely conflicting with something else, but I don’t know what with what, if you know what I’m saying. (I’m so tired and fed-up of re-formating and reloading everything! It’s soooo frustrating!)

And why am I suddenly being swamped (it feels like an invasion!) with pop-up ads and messages -- even when my browsers are not open! In fact, even when I’m not using the PC, pop-up ads pop-up (pun absolutely intended) constantly! Urgh! Let me say that again… URGH! I’ve never had this problem before. This is the first time. I know, it may sound strange, but I’ve never had to deal with pop-up messages before. What’s up with this new copy of Windows?!?! Even scrubbing my system with two different anti-spyware programs hasn't solved anything. URGH!

Also, how on earth do I get IE (Internet Explorer) to open up additional windows in their fully expanded size, rather than in small midget boxes which I have to manually expand. It’s driving me crazy, I tell you! I can’t find a way to tell Bill Gates’ “masterpiece” to stop bugging me, and to let me right click and open additional full-sized windows. I’ve never had this problem with all my previous PCs. (Are you seeing a trend here?)

Please help someone… before I yank all my hair out, or before I commit murder!

Sorry, is that three things I just asked? Yes, I think it is. Okay, I’ll stop here, because there are many, many more irritations in my digital life right now, and this can very easily turn into a 100-page anti-MS rant.

I think that’s enough of all that depressing stuff. On to happier -- and yummier -- things…

Boy! Life was crazy in the 2-3 weeks before Chinese New Year. I did so much baking this year it was unbelievable! I was almost living and breathing nothing but flour, eggs and butter! I even started to dream of nothing but flour, eggs and butter in my sleep!

And after a few weeks of frenzied, chaotic, frantic (and panicked -- right at the end, when I ran out of time) daily marathon baking sessions, many of which stretched way past midnight, the final tally… about 20-22 (I lost count towards the end) different types of cookies, and hundreds and hundreds of cookies for each type (I really don’t know how many hundreds, or thousands, of cookies I made -- people were just making off with batches of the cookies almost as fast as I was churning them out; many were wanting to place orders, but I simply didn't have the time this year and had to disappoint everyone). On top of all the cookies, there were also several other different types of Chinese New Year goodies that I had to ensure were flowing from the kitchen in time for the first day of festivities.

Then there was all that cooking on New Year’s Eve for the reunion dinner. Add spring cleaning, work and… Life, and I had an overflowing, groaning-with-excess plate to deal with.

It was exhausting work! And I think I probably have had my fill of baking and cooking for at least the next few weeks (or months even!)

Yet, over and above the tiredness, there is a deep, deep sense of fulfillment and joy. I have created quite a few winners this year -- recipes I truly love and intend to keep and re-use again and again for many years to come. The gratification of seeing those I love and care for genuinely enjoying the fruits of all that hard labor is priceless and immeasurable.

It has been a good New Year. I hope yours (for those who are celebrating) has and continues to be as good.

Regular blogging will resume soon… with pictures (hopefully! -- fingers crossed) and more food talk.

Until then, Happy Valentines, everyone!

Hi Renee - happy New Year and happy Valentine's Day to you!! I have Windows XP home edition and also use the Google toolbar and never see pop-ups any more. Hope you're able to get your new PC working well soon!

Can't wait to hear about all your cookie making - I just can't imagine making that many!

Most of all - welcome back!

the popups sound like messenger popup

start > run

in the new box type "services.msc" without quotes and hit enter

sort them by name (most left column) and look for the one named Messenger. If status is "started". then right click > stop

then right click > properties. On startup type : choose "Disabled"

if it's internet popups use firefox and/or get this great program http://www.admuncher.com/

also, with internet explorer being small. open a single new window. resize it to maximum (or whatever size you want) and then File > Close. all new windows should be this size unless the website you're visiting specifically choses to make them small. if that still bugs you, admuncher has an option in there to stop sites from resizing windows

also, you should ideally install system drivers first. so motherboard, video card, sound, camera/scanner drivers. and then the associated software. and highly recommend restarting between each driver/software install.

good luck with it

ps. love ur blog, am a loyal reader of it =D

Hi Renee ,
great to have you back. Happy New Year!! Got new Pcs last week too and had to have the puter guy come fix them.. apparently Nortons internet security tends to cause havoc with XP and you're better off staying with just the regular Nortons antivirus and your firewall. Just conveying what the guy said.. me being very puter-challenged

Hi Renee,
All those pop-up ads are presumably spyware or adware that may have been installed on your computer without your knowledge when you were installing some "free" software such as a weather toolbar or a file sharing program. To get rid of them, check out this free software program, "Ad-ware" which you can download from this website: http://www.download.com/3000-2144-10045910.html?part=69274&subj;=dlpage&tag;=button
If your OS is Window XP, make sure you update it to SP2 for extra security protection and don't forget to also install the Norton anitvirus software which is a necessity for every computer user. I hope the above information helps.
Happy CNY! Glad to see you back online again.

Hi Renee, great to hear from you after a long silence. Certainly missed you! I understand though. Hope to hear more from you in the next few weeks. Take care!

Hi Renee,

I know what you mean - everytime they install an upgraded Windows operating system or I get a new computer, it drives me crazy, because everything looks different.

It usually takes me awhile to figure out how to get things looking and working "normal" again. Like, how to stop the documents from opening up a new tab on the taskbar each time I launch a new Word or Excel document; or how they only give me a short list of my latest used functions on the toolbar. Silly stuff like that.

Anyway, hope you get your computer back to your "normal" state too...

hey Renee
You are back!!
Gong Hei Fatt Choi~ and Happy Lunar New Year!
Emailed you on CNY but my email went crazy and all mails were bounced back! I was fuming!!
Anyway, glad to have you back. *hugs*

Wow, what a busy Chinese New Year you had! I wonder if you are going to share some Chinese New Year goodies recipes with us? Living in the States makes it hard for me to celebrate CNY since I can never find my hometown CNY goodies at all. When I grew up in Sarawak I used to enjoyed so many different types of New Years cakes & cookies, but I don't know their names (except kek batik & cek hati parek), thus, no way to find recipe...*big sigh*

hi Renee, maybe you should buy a Mac? Hehehe! Just kidding... seriously it is not easy to rebuild a Windows system. It is not meant to plug and play more like plug and *pray* :).

Glad you're back, I was wondering whether you got swept away by the tsunami. ;) But we sure miss you.

hiya MrsT,

thanks so much for the offer of help; it's much appreciated.
I was really at my wits end, having reformated my hard disk at least 3 times!! and with each reloading taking on average 4-5 hours!! URGH!
anyway, finally managed to get someone to do it for me -- technical instructions tend to go over my head, unfortunately : (
and I think we are almost there - FINALLY!
just a couple of programs more to go, and I should be home free! yippee!

I'll email you if I run into problems again, can?
and I would of course be happy to send you some homemade pineapple tarts if I thought they would survive the postal journey to the other side of the world ; D ; P

I actually use both Firefox and IE simply b'cos some sites don't seem to work with IE at all -- for example Citibank Internet Banking (boo!)
can't wait for the day when everyone switches!

thanks again!

thanks, Cathy!
Happy Valentines to you too!
it's good to be back... I missed everyone...

DC!!
I love you!! : D ; P
you are my knight in shining armor... saving me from losing my sanity! ; D
yes, they were messenger popups (that's why all my anti-spyware programs were not turning up anything), but I simply had no idea how to stop them... and just by following your clear instructions, suddenly.... peace, quiet... bliss! Ahhhhh....
thank you! thank you! thank you!

I've also reloaded everything again -- or almost... just my company's accounting program and 1 or 2 others, and then I'm there.
and so far so good -- fingers crossed!
thank you so much!!

I can't even begin to tell you how grateful I am!

still haven't managed to solve the small-sized IE windows problem though.
when I first launch IE, the window opens up to full size.
but when I right-click on any hyperlinks within the original window, the new windows all open up in midget sizes -- no matter how many times I expand them and then close them from file > close.
sigh!
oh well, maybe this is something I have to live with?? or would you have some idea of what else I can do? ; )

thanks again, dc... from the bottom of my heart! : )

hi Keona,
it's good to be back! : )

I'm feeling better that I'm not the only puter-klutz around here... ; p
yeah, I find changing PCs to be a highly disruptive affair... so I tend to resist it unless the puter dies on me and I have no choice.

I used to use Norton anti-virus too, but switched to Bitdefender a couple of years back... and quite like it... it seems to stop or find things that slip pass Norton.

hi Susan,
thanks for the welcome back and for the helpful tips : )
I've been using ad-aware for quite a few years... and this time round, have added spybot to my repertoire too... it seems to be able to find things that ad-aware misses.
unfortunately, my problem was a messenger-rooted one, and not spy-ware... but thankfully I've gotten it solved now, with help from DC.
thanks again for taking the time to write and help me out : )

hi Elna,
I certainly hope to be back blogging regularly soon : )
you take care too!

hi jcheng,
I was this far... from losing... my... sanity...
had to reformat my hard disks (yes, plural) 3 times... and each reloading was about 4-5 hours... only to discover something wasn't right, and EVERYTHING had to be redone!
but thankfully, I'm almost there... and things are almost feeling comfortable again.
what a relief!

pinkcocoa!
Xin Nian Kuai Le!
Wan Shi Ru Yi!
did you have a good one?

I did get your email... thanks...
sorry I haven't replied yet... am still slowly going through all my mailboxes -- almost done with 3, and 2 more to go : p
will write soon... *hugs*

hi Fiona,
: D hmmm... that's rather a big hint ; )
I'll see what I can do... a lot of the recipes I can't post unfortunately simply because I'm starting some baking workshops (by popular request).
but otherwise, I'm always sharing lots of stuff here.

btw, what's cek hati parek, if I may ask?

hey celiaK!
so nice to hear from you again!

yep! I think one of these days, I'm going to become so fed-up with MS and Windows, I'll end up making the big switch-over!
I contemplate it each time I have PC problems... but chicken out each time...
maybe one day... : )

lol! you're right! I like that.. "plug and pray"... or maybe more like "plug and plead"... which then degenerates into "plug and curse" : D

Hi Renee,

http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1206404,00.asp

might help you out, or as i said. Admuncher can force windows to always be full sized.

best i can find atm =\

hiya Renee
Don't worry. Take your time to reply ;-)
Yup, I had a pretty good one over here with the only regrets: no kuih mur over here and I have been lazy to get my hands dirty in the kitchen!

Posted by: pinkcocoa | February 16, 2025 02:46 PM

Hi Renee,

Glad to see that you are back and blogging. Singapore just wasn't the same without your posts. I am a computer ignoramous myself, but recently when I began to have all kinds of frustrating problems with my own PC and could not figure out how to solve them, I ended up calling a computer consultant who came over and solved every problem I had within an hour. If you want a referral, just drop me an email.

Posted by: Danielle | February 16, 2025 08:37 PM

Kek Hati Parek is a very delicious cake served during CNY and Hari Raya in my hometown (Kuching). Personally I think it's a Malay cake, the recipe uses many ingredients (butter, flour, eggs, sugar, brown sugar, molasses, two types of rasins, chocolate, holick) and need to be steamed for many hours. It looks a bit like the honey comb cake but the taste is completely different. I have never seen this cake elsewhere, not even in West Malaysia. Therefore, I am pretty sure this is a Sarawak cake. Malays in Sarawak make very interesting and unusual cakes, unfortunately I don't remember their names.

Posted by: Fiona | February 17, 2025 08:23 AM

hi dc,
guess what? your original advice about resizing the windows does work after all... the problem was with me!! LOL.
shows you what a hopeless computer-idiot I am!! duh... can't even follow simple advice like that!!
I'm totally ashamed of myself *blush*
anyway, someone else followed your instructions, and it worked beautifully! so, thank you again for everything... my PC is now up to speed. *hooray!*

hiya pinkcocoa,
I didn't get much kueh mur this year either : (
I made a two batches while I was experimenting with and tweaking the recipes, and only tried like 2 pieces from each batch before people made off with the entire batch because they liked it so much.
in the end, I didn't have time to make it again (I was very gung-ho about making pineapple tarts this year : )), so no kueh mur for New Year this year... sigh!

hey Danielle!
wow, imagine that! I never knew S'pore had such consultants available! haha! you're doing better than me. ; )
right now things look good on the PC front *touch wood*
but if I need help again, I'll definitely email you for the name and number... thanks! : )

hi Fiona,
the cake sounds interesting... I'm trying to picture it, but can't quite place it at the moment...
perhaps I've tasted it before but just can't remember...
I'll keep a look out for it or for a recipe for it : )
thanks for coming back and sharing.
