It’s a Digital Life

And so Shiokadelicious! was featured in The Straits Times’ (our national broadsheet) IT supplement “Digital Life” last week, as their choice for “Blog of the Week”. I’m honored (and a little embarrassed, if truth be told).

Initially, I was rather ambivalent about appearing in the national newspaper -- it’s just too public for a blog that started out as a fairly private (okay, I know… how private can the Internet be, right?)… maybe a better word would be “anonymous” sharing of my food adventures. Having my picture (I would personally have preferred a more flattering one, if I had a say in it) published for the entire nation to see is another ball game altogether. Those who know me but do not know that I have a blog, now do. And frankly speaking, that feels weird. Very weird. I’m not sure I like the feeling, but there you go. So, if you know me and are reading this, please drop me a line to say “hi” ; it will make me feel better. icon_smile.gif

Still, I’m flattered that we were featured!

Thanks to the many who wrote to me after seeing the article. Sorry, I’m only now slowly reading (and enjoying) your emails, now that I’m back online again.

Many thanks too to TM for making my day. icon_wink.gif He’s probably one of my youngest, if not the youngest, reader -- 12 and already baking and cooking up a storm in the kitchen. He wrote and asked if I would sign the newspaper article (how sweet is that!). Of course I would, I said. I think his request probably thrilled me more than it did him! I mean, my first “official” autograph! Haha! (Down Ego, down! Down, I say!). It was awfully nice to meet him and to get to taste a few pieces of the cakes and biscuits (or cookies, for the American readers) that he baked for Chinese New Year. I think we have a future world-class chef on our hands!

For those who are curious, here’s the link to the Straits Times article (you’ll have to sign in -- it’s free), and in case they remove the article in the days to come, here’s a PDF copy (minus my photo -- of course icon_wink.gif).

Thank you everyone, once again, for your warmth, encouragement and support of Shiokadelicious!

Hi Renee,

Congratulations and Happy New Year!

I am so glad that :
1. you are back
2. you are back to blogging
3. you are back to blogging and eating (yea! that means more food posts! I still remember your yu-sheng posts from last year - yu-sheng and popiah are like food groups to me)
4. I finally get to "meet" you in person - I missed your photo the last time you had it on your blog for a split milli-second.

Anyway, welcome back and enjoy your new computer!

jcheng!!
wow! so good (and a relief too) to hear from you!
when I didn't get a reply to my Xmas/New Year email, I got a little concerned... hope all is well with you and the family.
it's good to be back... though I think after all the New Year gorging (over-indulgence, if I want to be polite ; )), I think a period of austerity eating is in order ; p

anyway, wishing you and your family a wonderful and blessed New Year of the Rooster!

Lance!
now you've got me blushing furiously! : D

Posted by: foodpocket | February 16, 2025 12:52 PM

I read the original Straits Times article! I don't know why you worry about calories and what not. You're so thin! BTW, I tag you for the music meme at http://home.earthlink.net/~sugoodsweets/blog/2005/02/bakery-beats.html

Posted by: Jessica | February 16, 2025 01:34 PM

Hiya Renee
When did this pleasant surprise take place? You been keeping it a secretfrom us all along and now that's a surprise for everyone not in Singapore!

*Oops* I have also tagged you for the music meme here:
http://tabetai.blogspot.com/2005/02/music-in-my-kitchen.html You are just so popular. hehe ;-)
And yup, I agree with Jessica. You are so slim, no need to worry about calories lar!

Posted by: pinkcocoa | February 16, 2025 02:34 PM

Happy New Year, Renee. Now if I run into you at Tiong Bahru Pau, I can say hi. Hehe

Posted by: ST | February 16, 2025 02:38 PM

Ah, if I only knew! :-)

By the way, the pinakbet recipe I promised a long time ago is online now, just before the musical meme. I got tagged too and would've sent it your way if I didn't know you've already been tagged by Alberto, hehe!

hey Stef!
thanks so much!
and Gong Xi Fa Cai to you and Mike too! : )
wishing you a year of lots of love, blessings, happiness, joy, wealth and health! : )

hi foodpocket,
thank you : )
and you can spell it any way you like... it's the thought that counts : )

hi Jessica,
thanks... but I guess I just prefer to eat healthier wherever possible : )
besides, it's more challenging to cook / bake healthier yet tasty food, right? ; )

hiya pinkcocoa,
no lah... it was kind of a surprise for me too... it happened very quickly from the time they approached me to the publishing of the article : )

hehe... look who's talking, yah... I think I saw a pic of you once (without the head!!)... or at least I think it was you... and you are very, very slim! ; )

hi ST,
: D
or... at the hawker centre... just be sure to tell me if I have a bit of chye sim stuck between my teeth, yah? ; D

Happy New Year to you too! : )

hi Karen!
the pinakbet looks good! I'm totally intrigued by the ingredients... I've never tried or tasted bitter gourd in combination with those other vegetables before.
I'm trying to imagine what it might taste like... but I think I'll just have to try it one day soon, and find out.
oh, and I love the new look of the blog, by the way ; )
